How Cursive Trace works

The 5 levels

  1. Warm-ups. Undercurves, overcurves, swings, hills, loops, tall loops and waves: the strokes most cursive letters are built from.
  2. a to m. Small cursive letters a through m, one at a time, with a numbered dot and arrows for each stroke.
  3. n to z. Small cursive letters n through z.
  4. Join it. Short words like cat, sun and web, traced without lifting a finger, so kids feel how the letters connect.
  5. Capitals. 17 of the cursive capitals, such as A, M and T.

Where it fits in school

Common Core doesn't include cursive, so there's no national standard to list here. Many states have passed their own laws that require it, and the list has grown in the last few years. Where it's taught, it usually starts in 2nd or 3rd grade. Ask your kid's teacher when it starts at their school.
