What kids learn in K–3 reading

Kindergarten is about hearing the sounds inside words: rhymes, syllables and the first sound in a word, then matching sounds to letters. 1st grade is phonics: word families, silent e, bossy r and vowel teams, plus sight words and first sentences. 2nd grade moves to longer words, endings like -ed and -ing, and reading short passages for meaning. 3rd grade adds grammar, spelling patterns, paragraphs and reading closely for the main idea.

Handwriting lives here too: Letter Trace for print letters in kindergarten and 1st grade, and Cursive Trace in 3rd.

How the reading games teach it

Every reading game reads its words aloud, so your kid hears the sounds while they look at the letters, and a kid who's still learning to read can play alone.

A wrong answer gets a hint before another try, and the levels move up only when a round goes well.
