What kids learn in K–3 math

Kindergarten is counting with meaning: how many, which group has more, and the pairs that make 10. In 1st grade kids add and subtract within 20, start place value to 100 and tell time. 2nd grade stretches to three-digit numbers, regrouping, money and measuring in inches and centimeters. 3rd grade is the year of multiplication, division, fractions and area.

Each game sticks to one skill, like make-ten facts or telling time to 5 minutes, so you can pick the one your kid is working on in class.

How the math games teach it

Every game climbs through levels. Nine right on the first try moves up a level, and a tough round steps back one. A wrong answer shows the picture or the steps, then your kid tries again.

Some math games read their questions aloud. The rest are built on pictures to count and compare, so most kids who can't read yet can still play them.

What these games line up with in school

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Standards vary by state, so check with your kid’s teacher. Each standard’s page lists the games that practice it and ideas to try at home.
