Add and subtract within 20 using strategies like making ten and doubles.
1.OA.C.6 is part of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. These 4 games practice it. Standards vary by state, so check with your kid’s teacher for the exact match.
Number Garden: Each problem is a little garden sum: berries to add or take away, with a flower growing in the bed for every right answer. Miss one and counting dots appear under the numbers so your kid can count it out. Levels start with adding to 5 and finish mixing adding and taking away to 20.
Make Ten: A hen lays eggs in an egg-carton ten-frame, and your kid works out how many more fill it. That's the make-ten fact (7 and 3, 6 and 4) that later mental math is built on. A miss lights up the empty spots to count, and every first-try answer hatches a chick.
Frog Hops: A frog hops along a number line of lily pads. Kids count on to add and count back to subtract, first one hop at a time and then in bigger jumps, so adding and subtracting become moves on a number line.
Doubles Bugs: A ladybug shows the two numbers as spots on its two wings, so 4 + 4 looks like a matching pair. Kids learn doubles to 5, then to 10, then near doubles like 6 + 7, a step from facts they know to facts they don't.
