During a game
Every game works the same way, so once your kid knows one, they know them all.
Starting a game
Your kid taps a game tile (or a spot in their valley). The game opens at the level that’s right for them, based on how their last rounds went. The first time, it starts at the beginning.
At the top, Level 1 ▾ shows the level they’re on and its stars. Tapping it lists every level with its stars, so your kid (or you) can pick a different one. ← Games goes back to their home screen.
A round
- A round is 10 problems. The game shows which problem they’re on.
- Most games read aloud. 53 of the 72 games read their questions aloud: every game outside math, and 12 of the 31 math games. The other math games are built on pictures to count and compare.
- Each game has a 🔊 button to turn its sound off and on.
- Buttons are big enough for small fingers on a phone.
- Problems are mixed up each round, so replaying a level isn’t the same round again.
When they get one wrong
Nothing scary happens. The game gives a gentle “almost” and helps: it might show the problem with objects to count, sound out a word, or point to what to look at. Then your kid tries again until they get it.
What counts is whether they got it right on the first try. In Number Garden, for example, a first-try answer grows a flower and one that took another try grows a sprout. That first-try count is what moves them between levels and earns stars.
Today’s mix
Today’s mix is 3 shorter rounds of 5 problems, one game after another. The app picks them: levels your kid hasn’t mastered yet first (the ones they haven’t played for longest), then new games for their grade, then a favorite they’ve already mastered.
- There’s no level picker in the mix. The app has already chosen.
- The names of the 3 games show at the top, with a ✓ on each one finished.
- After each round it says Next up and moves on by itself.
- The mix is the same all day. If your kid stops partway, it picks up where they left off.
- Mix rounds count toward levels, stars, the valley and the streak just like any other round.
Stopping partway
Only finished rounds are saved. If your kid leaves in the middle of a round, that round isn’t counted, and nothing is lost: they start a fresh round next time. If the internet drops when a round ends, a note says it didn’t save, and the next round tries again.
Common questions
- What happens when my kid gets an answer wrong?
- The game gives a gentle nudge and helps, for example by showing objects to count, then they try again. Only first-try answers count toward levels.
- How does the game choose how hard it is?
- 9 or 10 right on the first try moves your kid up a level. Half or fewer moves them back one. Anything in between stays put.
- What if my kid stops in the middle of a round?
- Only finished rounds are saved, so nothing is lost. They start a fresh round next time.
